The administration of US President Donald Trump is recalling dozens of American ambassadors from posts around the world, with some reports listing Lithuania among the countries affected.
According to US media reports, a total of 48 ambassadors across Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Central and South America would be removed, marking the second mass dismissal of diplomats appointed by former President Joe Biden. The first occurred during the early months of Trump’s second term.
The New York Post reported that key posts left vacant would include countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Nigeria, Rwanda, Somalia, and South Sudan in Africa; Armenia, Lithuania, North Macedonia, and Slovakia in Europe; and Yemen in the Middle East.
However, a Washington Post column by Josh Rogin, which first reported the dismissals, did not mention Lithuania. An earlier version of the story cited nearly 30 ambassadorial removals rather than 48. The British news site The Telegraph named only several European countries affected: Armenia, North Macedonia, Slovakia, and omitted Lithuania.
A senior State Department official told the New York Post on Monday that the recalls are “a standard process in any administration” and that Trump has the right to ensure that individuals serving abroad advance his “America First”.
