European astronauts will soon snack on bite-sized Lithuanian creations in orbit after the European Space Agency approved three recipes developed in Panevėžys.
The space snacks – each a one-gram cube measuring just one cubic centimetre – are made from familiar foods such as fruits, vegetables, meat or dairy. Despite their tiny size, the cubes are densely packed with nutrients.
“One cube can contain the equivalent of a whole beetroot,” said Laura Kaziukonienė, head of the food technology company Geld Baltic.
Kaziukonienė said the products combine innovative proteins with freeze-dried fruit, berry and vegetable powders. “We created a new concept where freeze-dried powders are combined with specific ingredients so the cubes can be eaten immediately without adding water,” she said.
The cubes retain full flavour and nutritional value and can be stored for anywhere from two to 20 years because the lack of moisture prevents microbiological processes. Each astronaut’s snacks will be tailored to individual nutritional needs.
