German Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan pledged assistance in the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip on Sunday, while on a visit to Egypt.
“Germany will make a contribution to the reconstruction of Gaza once conditions allow,” she said. Alabali Radovan highlighted water and energy provision, along with temporary accommodation, as areas where Germany could help.
A durable ceasefire and a secure humanitarian situation were preconditions, she said.
UN estimates currently put the cost of reconstruction at $50 billion or even considerably more.
Germany has been assisting with development in the Palestinian Territories since the 1980s. It backed construction of a water purification plant in the Gaza Strip and has sent aid to the region.
After the United States, Germany is the largest supplier of arms to Israel. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), one third of Israeli armaments imports between 2020 and 2024 derived from German production.
Meetings planned for Alabali Radovan in Egypt include discussions with Prime Minister Mustafa Madbuli and Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atti.
Egypt has put forward a Gaza reconstruction plan that has been rejected by the United States and Israel.
