Around 60 percent of Latvian residents are very or somewhat confident about the strength of European Union (EU) democracy in the next five years, according to the latest Eurobarometer survey.
More than half, or 53 percent, of respondents are somewhat confident about the strength of EU democracy in the next five years, with 45 percent of EU residents giving the same answer. By contrast, 8 percent of respondents in Latvia and 10 percent in the EU as a whole are very confident about the strength of the Union’s democracy.
Another 24 percent of Latvians are less confident. 45 percent of the bloc’s member states are also less confident. The answer “very unconvinced” is given by 10 percent of Latvians and 13 percent of EU residents.
The survey asked respondents what their concerns are about EU security in the next five years. 28 percent of Latvians said they were very concerned, while EU residents as a whole were less concerned. The answer “very worried” was chosen by 17 percent of EU Member States’ residents.
Less than half or 44 percent of the Latvian population stressed that they were somewhat concerned, while 47 percent of the EU population gave this answer. A further 20 percent of Latvians said they were not very worried, while 26 percent of EU residents chose this answer.
The Eurobarometer survey took place from June 25 to July 2. A total of 25,658 interviews were conducted in the EU and 1,007 in Latvia.
