Vilnius planning to raise public transport fees

Vilnius has mooted plans to raise public transport fees, with single-ride tickets scheduled to nearly double in price.

The price of a single 30-minute ticket would rise to EUR 1.25 from EUR 0.65, while a 60-minute ticket will cost EUR 1.75, as against 90 euro cents.

The price of a monthly ticket would rise by EUR 16 to EUR 45, while an annual ticket would cost EUR 480, or an increase of EUR 170.

There are also plans for new tickets such as family tickets which would cost EUR 3.5, as well as group tickets for 10-15 people and 16-25 people.

All existing discounts would remain in place under the new system.

City representatives say that the price hikes are aimed at raising funds to improve the quality and development of public transportation services in the Lithuanian capital city.

“We plan to acquire 36 new trolley buses this year,” journalists were told on Monday by Loreta Levulyte-Staskeviciene, director of the Judu municipal public transport enterprise.  “Judu continues to upgrade its public transport fleet. We plan to phase out our old trolleybuses by the end of 2027, and we will continue to upgrade our vehicle fleet.”

According to municipal data, Judu collected around EUR 34 million in fares last year whilst also receiving EUR 84 million in subsidies from the local budget.

If approved by the Vilnius Municipality Council in March, the new fares will come into force on July 1.

Public transportation fees in Lithuania’s capital city were last changed in 2013.
