Third time’s the charm – will Lithuania’s new govt last this time?

Lithuania’s governing coalition is attempting to turn the page after months of political turbulence, nominating Social Democratic Party leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius as prime minister in a government reshuffle that President Gitanas Nausėda hopes will be the last of the parliamentary term.

The changes will bring a new coalition configuration, a new prime minister and several new ministers after less than a year in office for the outgoing government.

Political analysts say conditions may finally be in place for greater stability. Sinkevičius brings executive experience, stronger backing within the ruling Social Democrats and, perhaps most importantly, few viable alternatives.

After meeting with Sinkevičius last Wednesday, President Nausėda revealed that he had already encouraged the Social Democrat leader to take over as prime minister last year.

“According to all political conventions, it is more natural when the leader of the party assumes leadership of the government,” the president said.
