Swedish ferry operator taking over company in Latvia

The Swedish ferry operator Stena Line Scandinavia (Stena Line) is planning to become the sole owner of Baltreiss in Latvia, LETA learned at the Latvian Competition Council.

Stena Line is registered in Sweden and runs ferries which carry passengers and freight along more than 25,000 journeys each year. It is owned by a group of companies whose parent company is Stena in Sweden. The group has several companies in interrelated areas such as ferry services, offshore drilling, shipping, etc.

Baltreiss is a Latvian company in the area of freight transport, including international road haulage of general and industrial cargo, ro-ro sea freight, warehousing and stevedore services, as well as cargo clearance.

The parties to the deal thus operate in vertically linked markets, the Competition Council has noted, with Baltreiss using services from Stena Line. The agency adds that vertically linked markets include road haulage, maritime transport and port terminal services.

Market participants and others interested parties can comment on the proposed transaction by contacting the Competition Council by April 11, 2025.
