Latvian pharmaceutical manufacturer Olpha has signed a cooperation agreement with Switzerland-based international pharmaceutical company Adalvo to introduce a new medicine for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and weight management in the Baltic markets. The partnership will expand Olpha’s diabetes treatment portfolio.
The agreement was signed at the CPHI Milan pharmaceutical industry exhibition in early October this year, and the new medicine is expected to become available to patients soon. The partnership combines Adalvo’s expertise in pharmaceutical product development and supply with Olpha’s sales infrastructure, market knowledge and presence in all three Baltic countries.
New treatment options are particularly important in Latvia, where more than 100,000 people are registered as living with diabetes. According to the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, 105,608 people in Latvia were registered as having diabetes at the end of 2025, an increase of 2.1% compared with the previous year. Approximately 7,000 people were newly diagnosed with diabetes during the year.[1]
Timely diagnosis, appropriate treatment and regular health monitoring can help prevent or delay the development of complications. Broader treatment options, alongside a healthy diet and physical activity, therefore, play an essential role in patient care.
“This agreement is a significant strategic step in the company’s development as we actively expand both our presence in Europe and our product portfolio. Our partnership with Adalvo strengthens our offering in the strategically important field of diabetes and obesity treatment and lays the foundation for long-term growth in the Baltic countries. By combining our regional expertise and sales infrastructure with Adalvo’s product development capabilities, we aim to improve access to treatment options and deliver long-term benefits for patients and healthcare professionals in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia,” says Juris Hmeļņickis, Chairman of the Management Board of JSC Olpha.
The partnership aligns with both companies’ growth strategies. For Latvian pharmaceutical manufacturer Olpha, it offers an opportunity to expand its product portfolio and strengthen its position in the Baltics while pursuing broader development plans in Europe. For Adalvo, the partnership strengthens its position in the GLP-1 receptor agonist segment and supports the strategic objectives of its dedicated GLP-1 business unit. GLP-1 receptor agonists are prescription medicines that mimic the action of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1 and help regulate blood glucose levels.
“Adalvo is committed to building strong partnerships to accelerate access to innovative treatment options in key markets. Olpha’s well-established presence in the Baltics makes it an ideal partner, and we are pleased to begin working together to realise the full potential of this collaboration,” says Anil Okay, CEO of Adalvo.
This is not the first collaboration between the two companies. In March 2025, a generic antibacterial medicine for the treatment of urinary tract infections, jointly developed by Olpha and Adalvo, was launched in the Baltic markets.
The companies will announce the trade name and availability of the new diabetes medicine in the Baltic countries separately.
