New TNT factory to be built in Lithuania

Lithuania’s state-owned drilling, demolition and blasting services company Detonas is planning to build a TNT product plant in the northern part of the country, with an expected investment of EUR 28 million, but expected annual revenues of up to EUR 50 million once the plant is online.

The company plans to produce TNT for military use because of the current geopolitical situation, not least in terms of Lithuania’s own security needs, the Transport Ministry announced on Thursday.

“Given today’s geopolitical situation, the development of the explosives industry is a very significant step forward for the defence of Lithuania and the region,” Deputy Transport Minister Mindaugas Tarnauskas said in a news conference.

Detonas CEO Vaidas Zubavičus said that once TNT production begins, the company will be able to expand into new markets.

Construction of the new plant is due to begin in 2025 and to be completed in two years’ time. It is expected to produce 1,000 tonnes of TNT per year, focusing on markets in Lithuania, Ukraine, as well as EU and NATO member states. The plan is to export as much as 80% of output.

“TNT is an effective explosive material with a high explosive yield, and it is used to produce mines for the Lithuanian Armed Forces along with artillery projectiles, mining equipment, etc,” the ministry said.
