Milrem Robotics awarded contract to deliver Themis UGVs to Japan

Milrem Robotics, a developer of robotics and autonomous systems, has recently won a contract to supply unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) to the Japanese defense forces.

The company will deliver three Themis UGVs to Japan, configured for various tasks including equipment transportation and intelligence gathering.

These vehicles are equipped with Milrem’s Intelligent Functions Integration Kit (MIFIK), enabling them to autonomously perform diverse tasks on both roads and rough terrain. MIFIK allows UGV operators to plan missions using waypoint navigation and set en-route vehicle behaviors.

“The goal of the Japanese defense forces is to strengthen their defensive capabilities with unmanned assets, achieve asymmetric superiority, and reduce human casualties. This is the task for which our unmanned ground vehicles are uniquely qualified,” said Kuldar Vaarsi, CEO of Milrem Robotics.

“We are honored that the Japanese ground self-defense forces have selected us to support them in increasing the combat effectiveness of their ground forces through advanced robotics and achieving their capability goals,” he added.

Themis UGVs were selected by the Japan Ministry of Defense because they are based on cutting-edge technology and are already in use in 16 countries, including eight NATO countries — Estonia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The vehicles also support Ukrainian soldiers in the war against Russia.

The Japanese defense forces aim to use the UGVs to find new ways to increase the safety of more soldiers and make military operations more efficient.

Milrem Robotics is a developer and system integrator of robotics and autonomous systems, with offices in Estonia, Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the United States. The company is known for its unmanned ground vehicles Themis and Multiscope, the unmanned combat vehicle Type-X, and the autonomy kit MIFIK.
