Lithuanian, Swedish companies to upgrade NordBalt control system

Litgrid and Svenska Kaftnat, which are electricity transmission system operators in Lithuania and Sweden respectively, are working together to upgrade the control system of the NordBalt cable, which links the two countries.  The aim is to improve the stability and reliability of the Baltic and Swedish grids once Baltic networks are synchronised with Western Europe in February of next year.

Litgrid announced on Tuesday that the system’s hardware and software will be installed by the Swiss energy company Hitachi Energy by May 2026.

“The upgrade will provide new opportunities to ensure the security and reliability of Baltic power systems as we plan to join the continental European synchronous zone next year,” says Donatas Matelionis, director of Litgrid’s Power System Operations Department.

The 700-MW NordBalt interconnector between Klaipeda in Lithuania and Hybro in  Sweden went online in 2016.
