Lithuanian prime minister promises no halt to electricity services

Amid reports of potential sabotage that is targeted at strategic infrastructure in the region, including energy facilities, Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas has sought to assure consumers in his country that they will not be left with power even during critical situation.

“Simulated scenarios show that even in various critical situations, Lithuania will not be left without power,” Paluckas told reporters after a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Deputy Energy Minister Arnoldas Pikzirnis added that under no circumstances could Lithuania be left without electricity.

“We have evaluated all possible scenarios, including the loss of all interconnections,” the deputy minister explained. “We have reserves, and scenarios A, B, C, D and so on have been worked out.”

“Despite any provocations or incidents, our disconnection from Russia’s BRELL electricity grid is inevitable, and it will happen exactly one month from today,” Pikzirnis added.

The deputy minister also said that all scenarios are in place when it comes to links to the Continental European network in early February.

During its meeting, the Cabinet of Minister decided to bring forward by a few months the date upon which protection of the LitPol Link connection with Poland, via which Baltic grids synchronise with the continental network, will be transferred to the Public Security Service (PSS).

The infrastructure of the LitPol Link is near the town of Alytus, and it is currently guarded by a private security company.
