Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas informed the board of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) on Thursday of his decision to resign.
Party sources confirmed the news to BNS. The public broadcaster LRT also reported it, citing its own sources.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said on Thursday that Paluckas had informed him of his decision to step down.
“Gintautas Paluckas called me this morning and informed me of his resignation,” Nausėda told reporters.
He said Paluckas had made the only appropriate decision under the circumstances.
“I welcome his decision,” the president added.
Party sources also confirmed to BNS that Paluckas is stepping down as chairman of the LSDP.
The party’s leadership will be taken over by Mindaugas Sinkevičius, the mayor of Jonava District and Paluckas’ former first deputy.
