Lithuanian leads in online payments in euro zone, people still use cash

Lithuanians buy and pay for items online more than people in other euro zone countries, but cash still remains important. This according to a recent survey by the European Central Bank (ECB) about consumer payment habits.

“Lithuania has the highest share of online payments, as three out of ten Lithuanians shop online, while the average in the euro zone is only two out of ten,” Lithuania’s central bank reports.

Almost half of all point-of-sale payments are made electronically, the survey shows, but cash is still used extensively. Young people and those with higher incomes are more likely to shop online and less likely to spend cash.

62% of survey respondents in the euro zone and 57% in Lithuania say that cash is important in that it ensures anonymity and privacy, and it also makes it easier to keep track of one’s spending.

More than 50,000 euro zone residents were polled during the ECB-commissioned survey in the autumn of 2023 and the spring of 2024.
