Latvia’s parliament, the Saeima, re-elected Aigars Strupiss as chief justice of the country’s supreme court on Thursday.
The vote was 81 in favour and nine opposed.
As has been reported, Latvia’s Judicial Council had previously endorsed three candidates for the job. In addition to Strupiss, the job was also sought by two Supreme Court senators – Rudite Vidusa and Aldis Lavins.
Strupiss had been nominated by the chairman of the court’s Civil Cases Department, Normunds Salnieks, and the chairwoman of the Criminal Cases Department, Anita Polakova.
Meeting in plenary session on August 14, the Supreme Court decided to nominate Strupiss for another term as chief justice. More than one-half of the judges who were present – 17 in all, voted in favour of the nomination.
Strupiss’ first term in office will expire on June 15.
