The Bank of Latvia, which is the country’s central bank, will be releasing a silver collector’s coin, “Sun and Wind,” on June 17. It is being released in honour of the 400th anniversary of the Latvian city of Liepāja.

Artist Kriss Salmanis designed the coin, which depicts the contrasts of Liepāja by symbolically reflecting them in images of the Sun and the Wind. The balance between the two of them forms the city’s soul.

The coin depicts various elements from Kurzeme’s largest city. There is a line of buildings on the obverse, from cramped fishermen’s cabins, to the wide rooftops of the 17th century, on through elegant Art Nouveau streets, going past striking modern buildings and proud industrial relics. Finally, one’s gaze rests upon the spires of churches, thus reaching the vast skies above Liepāja where the Wind sets the tone.  Like an eternal street musician, it plays weather vanes and whispers through people’s souls.

The silver collector coin will be available on the Website e-monetas.lv/en from noon on June 17. The price will be EUR 82, and collectors will be limited to three coins. 3,000 have been minted by the Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt in the Netherlands.

The bank said that the coin will be presented on June 17 at the Liepāja Museum. The artist will be on hand to talk about its creation, and a sample of the coin will be on display on a special stand.
