International community must support Israel’s right to self-defense and provide moral and political support for Israel – Rinkevics

The international community must support Israel’s right to self-defense, which is enshrined in international law, and provide moral and political support for Israel, President Edgars Rinkevics told LETA.

The Hamas attack on Israel, with such a high number of victims, is absolutely reprehensible, said Rinkevics, pointing out that Israel has every right to self-defense by counterattacks.

“The international community must absolutely support Israel and condemn terrorist acts of such kind. The situation in Israel will aggravate the situation in the region and will also have an impact globally. I believe there is no room for compromise. This attack must be dealt with as soon as possible,” said the president.

The international community has traditionally been quite divided on developments in the Middle East, said Rinkevics. This time too, there have been different reactions around the world, with some countries supporting the Hamas invasion. In the president’s opinion, international organizations must react accordingly, and there is also room for diplomatic efforts.

In turn, Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) has said on Twitter that Latvia strongly condemns Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel and its citizens.

Hamas militants launched a surprise attack from the Gaza Strip on Saturday morning, firing several thousand rockets and rolling into a number of locations in southern Israel, killing more than 250 people, including 26 Israeli soldiers, while around 1,600 people have been injured.
