Increasingly more residents of Latvia feel stressed out over the war in Ukraine and the economic situation in Latvia, according to a survey on the resilience of residents and the population as a whole amidst Russia’s brutal war in Ukraine; the survey was conducted by the State Chancellery and the Latvian Transatlantic Organization.
More than half, or 62 percent, of respondents said that the economic situation in Latvia had increased their stress levels. On the other hand, 65 percent of respondents indicated that the ongoing war in Ukraine had caused them to feel more stressed out.
42 percent of respondents have less trust in local decision-makers, while 46 percent believe that society and their local communities are not prepared for different states of emergencies, including the current crisis caused by the war in Ukraine.
Furthermore, 23 percent of respondents believe that the Latvian government can successfully deal with a comprehensive crisis, while 48 percent do not believe in the government’s ability to cope with a crisis.
Across the Baltic countries, 29 percent of Latvians believe that the government is making the right decisions in a crisis situation, as do 36 percent of residents of Estonians and 28 percent of Lithuanians.
Estonians have the highest level of confidence that the country’s security services and armed forces will be able to protect the people – 36 percent, compared to 29 percent of respondents in Latvia and 28 percent in Lithuania.
57 percent of respondents in Latvia trust the president, 55 percent trust the State Police. On the other hand, almost 70 percent of respondents do not trust Saeima and 66 percent do not trust the government.
The survey has also found that only 38 percent of respondents are ready to cooperate with the Latvian government, 74 percent of respondents are ready to cooperate with their household members, 68 percent with colleagues, 64 percent with neighbors, 59 percent with other residents of Latvia, 54 percent with the local government.
