Hot weather causes power generation problems in Lithuania

Electricity output in Lithuania declined last week because of hot and windless weather, while consumption and prices rose. This was reported on Monday by Litgrid, the country’s power transmission system operator.

Between July 7-13, Lithuania generated 173 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity, which was a decline of 20% from the previous week. At the same time, however, consumption increased by 7% to 207 GWh.

Despite a 59% jump in prices, this was still the fourth cheapest week this year, with the average price at EUR 47 per megawatt-hour (MWh).

Deividas Siksnys, director for market development at Litgrid, said that the use of electricity was higher than in previous weeks.

The main reason for this is higher air temperatures, which drive up electricity use for cooling,” Siksnys said in a news release. “Hot weather typically means high output from consumers, allowing them to satisfy their own needs and helping to keep market prices low.”

Last week, Lithuania imported more electricity than it exported, with export flows down by 39% to 46 GWH, and imports up by 22% to 82 GWh.
