Greens/Farmers politician Mierina voted in as Saeima speaker

MP Daiga Mierina (Union of Greens and Farmers, ZZS) was voted in as Saeima speaker on Wednesday.

Mieriņa was previously chairwoman of the Saeima’s State Administration and Local Government Committee, a position she also held during the recent Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) led government, when she worked in the opposition.

The new government coalition led by Evika Silina (New Unity), and made up of New Unity, ZZS and the Progressives agreed on Mierina’s candidacy after Gunars Kutris (ZZS) was not able to obtain a parliamentary majority.

Kutris had previously won the approval of New Unity and the Progressives, but in recent days his statements in the media have raised public outrage and questions about his suitability for the post.

Born on March 3, 1969, Mierina graduated from the Latvian University of Agriculture, specializing in horticulture, and in 2009 obtained a Master’s degree in General Quality Management from Riga Technical University.

Mierina has worked for the State Revenue Service as a Chief Specialist in the Control Department, as well as at the Ministry of Transport.

She had been a long-standing member of the Carnikava County Council and also served as chairperson from 2009 to 2021.

Mierina held the post of chairwoman of the county council until 2021, when the regional reform merged Carnikava and Adazi counties and she found herself in the opposition.

A year later, Mierina stood as a candidate in the 14th Saeima elections on the ZZS list and was elected to parliament. Currently, Mierina is the Chairperson of the State Administration and Local Government Committee..
