German president: world has lost a modest ‘man of peace’

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier honoured the late Pope Francis as a “man of peace” in a letter of condolence issued shortly after the death of the pontiff.

“In Francis, the world has lost a shining beacon of hope, an authentic advocate of humanity and a persuasive Christian,” Steinmeier said in the letter published on Monday.

“His modesty, his spontaneity and his humour, but above all his tangibly deep faith touched people all over the world – and gave them support, strength and orientation,” Steinmeier said.

He emphasized Francis’ particular concern and love for the poor and marginalized, the displaced and refugees. “Many who felt forgotten felt heard, seen and understood by him.”

Catholics in Germany are mourning his death, as are many Protestant Christians in ecumenical solidarity, said Steinmeier.
