Funding agreed to support Ukraine’s EU accession

The European Union, Lithuania and Denmark on Wednesday signed an agreement on a new EUR 14 million programme to support Ukraine’s path toward accession to the European Union.

The Ukraine2EU programme will help Ukrainian institutions to better co-ordinate the accession process and to implement the necessary reforms, Lithuania’s Central Project Management Agency (CPMA) declared in a news release.

The programme will provide targeted support to the office of the Ukrainian deputy prime minister, the government office for European and Euroatlantic Integration, and the parliamentary secretariat and its European Integration Committee. Funding will also be provided to Ukraine’s Justice Ministry.

Money will also be available for civil society organisations which are contributing toward Ukraine’s EU integration.

The EU’s ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Mathernova, says that the signed agreement represents the beginning of the next phase of support for Ukraine’s UE integration.

“Ukraine’s future lies within the EU,” the envoy was cited as saying in the news release. “This programme will serve as an umbrella for EU and member state assistance in helping Ukraine to achieve this goal.”

Lithuania’s EU ambassador, Inga Stanyte-Tolockiene, notes that Denmark performed an “exceptional role” in supporting reforms in Lithuania when it was preparing its own process of EU accession.

“We are honoured to improve upon this legacy by teaming up with Demark to help Ukraine,” she explains.

The programme will run from 2025 until 2027 and will be implemented by the CPMA.
