Estonian National Opera starts cooperation with Opera Comique

As a result of a collaboration between the Estonian National Opera and the Opera Comique in Paris, a production titled “Pulcinella” & “L’Heure espagnole” premiered in Paris over the weekend.

This genre-crossing project combines Igor Stravinsky’s playful opera-infused short ballet “Pulcinella” with Maurice Ravel’s dance-inspired short opera “L’Heure espagnole.” The production will be presented to Estonian audiences next season, the Estonian National Opera said in a press release.

The project is directed by Guillaume Gallienne, a French filmmaker, theater director, screenwriter, and actor who has been awarded four Cesar Awards.

The director general of the the Estonian National Opera, Ott Maaten, describes international cooperation as very important.

“I believe this is a landmark collaboration in the international context. A joint project like this with a very important musical theater in Europe paves the way for further artistic cooperation and development of the Estonia National Opera,” said Maaten.

For the Estonian National Opera, this is the second major international joint project in recent times. Last year, the opera launched a collaboration with Opera Lombardia, a network of Italian opera houses. The historic Brescia version of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, a collaboration between six Italian opera houses and the Estonia National Opera, will be performed at the Estonia opera house in Tallinn in May. A tour of performances by the Estonian National Ballet in Spain is scheduled for early 2025.
