Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said that Estonia is continuing its diplomatic efforts to secure the release of an Estonian citizen who was on board a ship seized in the Strait of Hormuz.
“We are maintaining communication with the Iranian embassy in Helsinki and are closely cooperating with Portugal, under whose flag the seized ship was sailing. Portugal is exerting pressure on Iran in both Lisbon and Tehran to release the ship’s crew, which has prompted a frequent exchange of information between the Portuguese Foreign Ministry and the Estonian embassy in Lisbon,” Tsahkna said.
“We are also in contact with the relatives of the Estonian citizen on board, as well as with MSC, the company operating the ship, who have confirmed that all crew members are well and have been able to communicate with their families,” the foreign minister added.
Estonia also gave an overview of the process of freeing the Estonian citizen during an informal video meeting of the European Union foreign ministers on Tuesday evening, and called on all countries to raise the issue of the release of the ship’s crew in their communications with Iran.
