British PM apologises to Baltic States

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has apologised to the Baltic States for not having invited them to Sunday’s European leader summit on the issue of Ukraine, according to Asta Skaisgiryte, who is the chief foreign policy advisor to Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda.

“President Nauseda made it very clear that we were deeply dissatisfied with not being invited to London,” she told LRT Radio. “The UK prime minister began his speech by apologising to Baltic leaders and promising to avoid such things in future.”

Starmer spoke to Baltic leaders remotely in advance of the summit, which he organised in London to discuss further actions vis-a-vis Ukraine.

Earlier last week, Mr Stramer met with US President Donald Trump in Washington.

Skaisgiryte says that the summit was originally meant to sum up Starmer’s visit to DC, but instead the focus shifted to Friday’s public spat between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House.

“Starmer believes – and we cannot disagree – that this is a conversation which needs to continue as soon as possible and that Zelensky should meet with Trump again,” the presidential adviser added.

Starmer said in advance of the London summit that the UK and France are looking to work together with Ukraine on plans to end the conflict with Russia.

Both countries had previously proposed the dispatch of peacekeepers to Ukraine, but they are first seeking assurances of American assistance in the way of air and satellite surveillance and possible air support.

President Nauseda of Lithuania has said that any initiative to deploy peacekeepers in Ukraine will be possible only if a ceasefire is put into place.
