Arena in Riga gets new name

The Arena Riga in Latvia’s capital city will be called the Xiaomi Arena for the next five years, representatives of the venue told the news media on Monday.

Girts Krastins, board chairman at Arena Riga, told the LETA news agency that its partnership with the Chinese electronics firm Xiaomi will facilitate the development of the arena via a series of innovations.

The collaboration with Xiaomi will mean technological innovations, including new screens in the arena’s foyer, as well as a general move away from banners and paper to more sustainable technologies such as digital screens.

“Xiaomi will make payments to Arena Riga which will be used to improve and maintain our infrastructure,” Krastins says. He adds that the partnership will also improve the sound technology at the Xiaomi Arena during sporting events so that visitors can better hear what’s going on and enjoy the event more thoroughly.

Parties in the process have agreed that the overall sum of the contract will not be disclosed, though Krastins did say that the annual investment in development and maintenance of the arena varies between EUR 300,000 and EUR 700,000 per year.
