Latvian athlete Aigars Fadejevs has passed away

Aigars Fadejevs, a Latvian racewalking athlete who won the silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, has passed away at the age of 48.

Fadejevs was born in Valka on December 27, 1975, and he competed in three Olympic Games during his career.  In 1996 in Atlanta he finished 6th in the 20-km walk. In Sydney it was silver in the 50-km walk and 14th in the 20-km walk.  In Athens in 2004, Fadejevs took 11th and 9th place in these disciplines respectively.

Aigars Fadejevs took silver at the European Championships in the 20-km walk in 1998.  The year before that he had won the European U-23 title. His best result in world championships was 4th in the 50-km walk in 2001.

Fadejevs also holds several racewalking records in Latvia.

After retiring from his athletic career, Fadejevs worked as a physiotherapist who worked with globally known athletic stars such as the late NBA basketball player Kobe Bryant.
