The Latvian mountaineering community has been struck by tragedy following a fatal accident on Denali, North America’s highest peak, in Alaska. Three experienced Latvian climbers — Inese Pučeka, Vija Olte, and Renārs Kunigs-Salaks — lost their lives during an expedition on the mountain.

According to information released by the Latvian Mountaineering Association and U.S. authorities, the accident occurred on a dangerous section of the route between the high camp and Denali Pass at an altitude of approximately 5,545 meters (18,192 feet). The climbers were part of a Latvian expedition attempting to reach the 6,190-meter (20,310-foot) summit of Denali, a mountain renowned for its extreme weather conditions, steep terrain, and challenging climbing environment.

A fourth Latvian climber, Mārtiņš Bilzēns, was seriously injured in the incident and was evacuated by rescue teams for emergency medical treatment. The remaining members of the expedition stayed on the mountain to assist with rescue and recovery efforts and to coordinate their safe descent.

The Latvian Mountaineering Association expressed its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased climbers, describing them as respected and experienced members of the mountaineering community whose loss will be deeply felt throughout Latvia.

The expedition had begun on May 14 and was expected to continue until mid-June. In the days leading up to the accident, members of the team had reported difficult weather conditions, including strong winds and challenging terrain. Denali is considered one of the most demanding mountains in the world due to its combination of altitude, severe cold, and rapidly changing weather.

Among those who lost their lives were media professional Inese Pučeka, dentist Vija Olte, and entrepreneur Renārs Kunigs-Salaks. Their deaths represent a profound loss not only for Latvia’s mountaineering community but also for the many people whose lives they touched through their professional and personal achievements.

This tragedy is regarded as one of the most severe mountaineering accidents involving Latvian climbers in recent history and serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with high-altitude expeditions, even for highly experienced mountaineers.

The thoughts of the nation remain with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the pursuit of one of humanity’s most challenging adventures.
