The newly appointed United States Ambassador to Latvia, Melissa Argyros, has officially begun her service, emphasizing the shared values and strategic priorities that define the partnership between the two countries.

In her first public remarks following meetings in Latvia, the Ambassador underscored the importance of common democratic principles:

“I am so honored to officially begin my service as the United States Ambassador to Latvia. Today I met with the President and reaffirmed this simple message: it is my privilege to serve in a country that shares our commitment to freedom.”

The Ambassador also expressed strong appreciation for Latvia’s role in collective defense and its commitments within NATO:

“I expressed our respect for Latvia’s leadership in our collective defense. Latvia is a model Ally, committing to 5% in defense spending.”

In addition, she highlighted the alignment of priorities regarding border security and transatlantic cooperation:

“Moreover, Latvia shares our priority of secure borders. And our close cooperation in NATO will be one of my top priorities as Ambassador.”

Beyond security matters, the Ambassador noted that the bilateral relationship extends into economic and commercial collaboration:

“But our partnership goes well beyond security. My experience in business and philanthropy has shaped how I approach partnerships and problem-solving, and I am excited about strengthening our commercial ties by supporting investment, innovation, and energy cooperation.”

Concluding her remarks, the Ambassador expressed gratitude for the reception she received in Latvia:

“I’m very grateful for the warm welcome, especially in this cold February! I can’t wait to build on our long tradition of friendship. Thank you!”

The Ambassador’s statement signals the beginning of a new chapter in U.S.–Latvia relations, which have long been anchored in security cooperation, shared democratic values, and growing economic ties.
