The value added tax (VAT) rate on bread, milk, eggs, and raw poultry meat will be reduced for one year, from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027.
The VAT rate on these products will be set at 12 percent, compared to the standard rate of 21 percent.
According to the Finance Ministry’s information report on priority measures to be included in the draft budget law for 2026–2028, the reduced VAT on basic foodstuffs will lower budget revenues by EUR 15 million in 2026 and by EUR 16.4 million in 2027.
Harijs Rokpelnis, chair of the Union of Greens and Farmers faction in the Saeima, told LETA that the parliament would also continue negotiations on introducing a reduced VAT rate for pork.
The package of budget bills for 2026 is scheduled to be submitted to the Saeima on October 15.
