The Republic of Lithuania and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka today mark 29 years of formal diplomatic relations, celebrating a friendship that has grown steadily since its establishment on 20 August 1996.

Over nearly three decades, ties between the two nations have expanded beyond traditional diplomacy to include education, trade, tourism, cultural exchange, and new areas such as technology, innovation, and cybersecurity.

Her Excellency Diana Mickevičienė, Ambassador of Lithuania to Sri Lanka (accredited from New Delhi), said:

“Today, our relationship is defined not only by cultural and people-to-people connections but also by business and technology partnerships. Lithuania stands ready to share its expertise in ICT, fintech, and cybersecurity, and to work closely with Sri Lanka for the betterment of both nations. The Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Lithuania to Sri Lanka has played a key role in strengthening bilateral links by facilitating academic exchanges, promoting tourism, and encouraging trade and investment. “

The Lithuanian community in Sri Lanka, though small, continues to be an active bridge between the two cultures, celebrating traditions, supporting new arrivals, and promoting people-to-people understanding.

A Voice from the Community

Ms. Vilma Mockuvienė, a member of the Lithuanian expatriate community living in Ahangama, shared:

“The Lithuanian Community of Sri Lanka, established seven years ago, is small, just 15 active members, but closely connected. We celebrate national holidays, preserve traditions, and support new arrivals.

Many Sri Lankans already know Lithuania, and despite cultural differences, we find beautiful similarities in language, folk art, and values. As more Sri Lankan students choose Lithuanian universities, and as opportunities in IT and digital innovation grow, our partnership will only strengthen.

For many of us, Sri Lanka has become home, thanks to its beauty, warmth, and the generosity of its people. But wherever we are, Lithuania lives in our hearts.”
