Several flights from the temporarily closed Vilnius Airport were diverted to Riga last night, according to data from the flight monitoring website Flightradar24.
Information on the website shows that seven flights were diverted to Riga between 11 p.m. on Saturday and the time when air traffic was restored at Vilnius Airport.
Latvian national airline airBaltic’s flight from Zurich to Vilnius was among those diverted to Riga overnight. The return flight from Vilnius to Zurich, scheduled for early Sunday morning, was cancelled, according to Flightradar24.
In addition, several airBaltic flights departing from Vilnius on Sunday morning experienced delays of around 30 minutes, and in two cases, about an hour.
As reported earlier, balloons from Belarus-typically used by smugglers-violated Lithuanian airspace late on Saturday evening. Operations at Vilnius Airport were temporarily suspended after the balloons were spotted near the airport, local authorities said.
Vilnius Airport’s airspace was closed at 22:16 on Saturday, and air traffic resumed at 04:50 early Sunday morning.
