Ryanair opens its 2nd EUR 20 mln MRO hangar at Kaunas airport

Ireland’s budget airline Ryanair on Tuesday inaugurated its second aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) hangar at Lithuania’s Kaunas Airport, with the investment totaling 20 million euros.

The expansion of the Kaunas aircraft maintenance service base, which has been in operation since 2013, will create 200 new jobs for highly skilled aviation engineering, mechanical and administrative specialists, the company said on Tuesday.

“The second hangar demonstrates our strong investment in upgrading aviation infrastructure in Lithuania to accommodate the continually expanding Ryanair fleet,” Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson, who opened the new hangar, was quoted as saying in the press release.

The opening of the new 8,000-square-meter hangar will allow up to four aircraft to be serviced at the base at a time.

Lithuanian Economy and Innovation Minister Ausrine Armonaite, who attended the opening event, said in the press release that Ryanair’s “new investments will not only create numerous jobs for local aviation specialists, but also increase the overall competitiveness of the Kaunas airport and further consolidate its position as the regional leader in MRO services”.

Simonas Bartkus, CEO of Lietuvos Oro Uostai (Lithuanian Airports, LTOU), the airport’s operator, said that Kaunas Airport remains the largest aircraft maintenance center in the Baltics.

Ryanair also announced that it is adding one new aircraft at Lithuania’s second largest airport, increasing its total Kaunas-based fleet to three.
