Public service media close RUS.LSM section, launch multi-lingual platform LSM+

LSM+, a new section of the LSM.LV public service media website that launched on Monday, will contain visual, audio and written content in several minority languages – news, analysis and unique stories in English, Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian and Polish – that will be available to watch, listen to and read in one place, representatives of Latvian Television told LETA.

In order to broaden the content available in other languages, Latvian Television has created the new LSM+ platform, which includes the existing RUS.LSM content for minority audiences, but highlighting also content in Ukrainian, Belarusian and Polish, as well as ENG.LSM, the section of Latvian news in English for international audiences.

According to Latvian Television, the ‘+’ mark symbolizes value added – the rich and diverse content available to everyone in various languages.

Latvian Television CEO Ivars Priede indicated that the aim and task of the public service media is to ensure effective and targeted communication with ethnic minorities, to keep the Latvia’s ethnic minorities audience in the Latvian information space by providing reliable and diverse information quickly and easily. So far, the richest content for non-native speakers has been produced in Russian and English.

“With these changes, we are purposefully expanding our offer in other languages by attracting journalists and editors who are not only able to produce content in Ukrainian, Belorussian and Polish, but are also familiar with the Latvian environment and society, which is essential to meet the high quality standards of the content produced by the public service media,” said Priede.

The Latvian Television CEO noted that the content in Ukrainian, Belarusian and Polish is currently less available on the portal than in other languages, but the company is committed to dealing with the challenges of attracting authors and creating content so that minority users could get more and more up-to-date and reliable information. In the future, LSM+  plans to provide content in more languages in addition to the current group of languages.
