Passenger buses in Riga are running up to 60 minutes late on Thursday due to heavy snowfall, Baiba Bartasevica-Feldmane, a spokeswoman for Rigas Satiksme municipal transport company, informed LETA.
On some routes, trams are running 15-20 minutes behind the schedule, trolleybuses are delayed for 30-40 minutes, while bus traffic is 40 minutes and on some routes even an hour behind the schedule.
The most difficult situation with public transport delays has been reported in the neighborhoods of Darzini, Mucenieki and Mangalsala, the transport company said.
As LETA was told at the Riga local government’s press office, last night the snow cover in the city thickened by 15 centimeters. Street gritting and cleaning started shortly after midnight.
On Thursday, November 30, motorists are allowed use public transport in Riga free of charge, as the local government has introduced the so-called “snow tickets” in a bid to reduce the number of transport vehicles on the streets during heavy snowing.
